From Gaddisa Lodge you have a nice view on Mount Kenya. South of Isiolo, lying 16 kilometers north of the equator, is snow-capped Mount Kenya. At 5199 meters it is the second highest mountain of the African continent and dominates the Central Highlands of Kenya. The mountain above the tree line is designated as a national park. At the foot you find rainforest and lots of bamboo. Higher up, there are beautiful plants such as lobelia and heather. In the forest there are elephants, buffalo, monkeys, antelope and wild hogs.
The Kikuyu people are the indigenous tribe of the Central Highlands, who view the mountain as their sacred place. The mountain was first climbed by Sir Halford McKinder in 1899. It is still one of the top favourites of mountaineers. There are three peaks. Point Lenana (4985 meters) can be climbed by any fit person. The two other peaks are more strenuous and require climbing experience.
There is a good paved road up to 2100 meters. On the way you find some of the most important tourist attractions of the area: Nanyuki, Meru en Embu. If you wish to visit Mt. Kenya there are several climbing routes: the Naro Moru Route, the Sirimon Route, the Chogoria Route, the Burguet Route, the Timau Route and the Summit Circle Path.
