Sustainable

Gaddisa Lodge & Safaris operates on a eco-friendly basis and supports the principles of  Sustainable Tourism and Ecotourism: environment and cultural orientated travel.

Sustainable Tourism means travelling while considering the environment, nature and local culture so that travel in the future remains possible.

Gaddisa is the initiator of a cooperation between local hotels, local organizations and local gouvernement for intens cooperation in nature, culture and employement.

The tourist industry in Kenya is of great importance. It is directly responsible for jobs and income. Indirectly it contributes to the infrastructure, healthcare and schooling. However it also has a downside. Profits from multinationals usually leave the country and mass tourism threatens local flora and fauna. Fortunately there are many projects in the world that stop this process and encourage sustainable tourism. Gaddisa Lodge & Safaris considers sustainable tourism as their primary aim. This means a symbioses between tourism, the environment and the local culture and its people. The total profit of Gaddisa Lodge & Safaris goes to the Borana people.

Gaddisa Lodge & Safaris supports the initiatives of STEP: Sustainable Tourism, eliminating  Poverty and strives to meet the demands required to use the Eco logo.

A few examples:

  • The ecological kitchen: products used in the kitchen are either grown in our own garden or obtained from trusted suppliers. Water used for food is sterilized.
  • Waste is made into compost for use in the garden and the rest is responsibly disposed of.
  • Safaris: We are very much aware that we are guests in the land and during safaris must have respect for the environment. Our guides are aware of this and support this concept.
  • Water Supply: The water used in the pool comes from our own well and has mineral qualities. The filter system sees to recycling of the water, therefore there is no unnecessary stress on the ground water level.
  • Waste water is purified in septic tanks before being returned to the ground.
  • Construction: During the building of the complex natural local materials were used.
  • Trees: Hundreds of trees of been replanted to compensate for the use of timer in the construction of the hotel.
