Community Fund

Gaddisa Lodge & Safaris is a community based project. This means that it is set up for the purpose of improving the living standards of the local people and for realizing initiatives based on microcredit.

Our guests regularly ask how they can contribute to improve the livelihood of the local people.

Not only our guests, but also the management and employees of Gaddisa feel responsible for the wellbeing and living standards of the local people.

With this in mind the Gaddisa Community Fund was set up and cooperate with the Dutch Support Group Kenya (DSG Kenya). See for their work www.dutch-supportgroup-kenya.nl  Through  various activities and generous donations from guests and associates we have been able to realise several wonderful projects.

Gaddisa Lodge & Safaris has 16 employees from the local community which means 250 people benefit. The total profit of the lodge goes to the local community.

The fund management consists of Gaddisa Lodge & Safaris board and Fasal Ghenetti as representative of the Borana people and the Galshu Self Help Group.

On this page we will show you the progress of the projects that we support:

The first large project that was completed was the sinking of a well with pump and purification system. Availability of fresh water meant that the Borana people could settle and they have since cultivated 5 hectares of land.

There is build a new bakery with money of a sponsor and  a fundraising in a Roman Catholic Parish in The Netherlands. The bakery is  completely operational and 7 local people found there a job.

In cooperation with the Selfhelpgroup there is build a eco-friendly chicken farm by micro-credit. This gives also a durable income for a number of local employees.

A sewing room is build where 12 women learn how to sew.

Lots of the Borana children go to a school which is located near Gaddisa. The construction of this school is terrible.  It has no floor and the walls are in desperate conditions. At this moment  there a fundraise campaign in the Netherlands for building a new school for the children. There is allready collected a reasonable amount of money but certainly more is needed.

One of the Borana tribesman has got his driver?s license through the microcredit project and now transports goods between Isiolo en Nairobi.

About 20 km from Gaddisa a priest, Father James, build a little church and a small school. This is a terrible building as well. So Dutch Support Group Kenya is building a new school fot those childred to. Now theay sitting in bad buildings and when it rains water get in the 'classrooms'.

ImageWe also busy know to help the disabled childen in the whole Isiolo district. There are a lot of them and they live very isolated. Each week they can get treathment and a number of them got allready a wheelchair to get them out of the their isolation. We want to buy more of those wheelchairs and the ultimate goal is to build a rehabilitationcentre for them.
